In an effort to understand grief and learn to cope with it, many people turn to books. Generally, books on grief fall into two categories: self-help and personal accounts. Some of these books can be extremely helpful and some just touch our hearts.

Books can be found through bookstores (the larger ones would have a better selection but don't forget to look at used stores, also), online book vendors (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, half.com to name a few), funeral homes (many keep a small lending library) and support group lending libraries.

This is one time where publishing dates are not as important as content. One book I have read several times over the years is Death Be Not Proud which is a story of a young boy who died in 1946. While the medical information is obviously outdated, the emotions remain the same. The pain the father imparts as he tells the story of his son is timeless. Reading that book today, I can understand exactly how he felt because we all feel the same way.

This is a very important area and we hope you will contribute to it. Even if a book only offers a chapter or small section which you found helpful, it can be important. If there are things in it you do not agree with please feel free to point those out, too. It can be just as important for us to share the negative experiences as it can the positive ones. Please send the information concerning the books you wish to recommend and include the full title, author, publisher, date published and a brief description/review using the email link on the home page.

Forever Ours: a forensic pathologist's perspective on immortality and living: a collection of real-life stories

Janis Amatuzio, M.D.

Forensic pathologist Janis Amatuzio first began recording the stories told to her by patients, police officers, and other doctors because she felt that no one spoke for the dead. She believed the real experience of death — namely, the spiritual and otherworldly experiences of those near death and their loved ones — was ignored by the medical professionals, who thought of death as simply the cessation of breath. She knew there was more. From the first experience of a patient in her care dying to the miraculous "appearances" of loved ones after death, she began recording these experiences. Dr. Amatuzio found that by telling the story of their death to a loved one, she could help bring some sense of completion to the grieving family and friends. Written by a scientist in approachable, nonjudgmental language for anyone who has lost someone they love, this book offers stories that can't be explained in purely physical terms.

Note from Laurie: Not only do I own this book and highly recommend it to anyone who feels the need to hear that our loved ones never really leave us but Dr. Amatuzio is our coroner. She is the one who autopsied my son and dealt with letting us know they could not find a cause of death. She took all the time we needed to answer our questions then and later. She is a very kind person and, after meeting her, I felt better about having my son's body autopsied. She mentioned his freckles and I knew then that she had not looked at him as just "a body" but as someone's son, brother, grandson, etc.

Beyond Knowing: Mysteries and Messages of Death and Life from a Forensic Pathologist

Janis Amatuzio, M.D.
In Forever Ours, forensic pathologist Janis Amatuzio described amazing connections and experiences between the dying and their loved ones. Here, she shows that these are life-changing moments for the living, making time on earth more satisfying and helping them focus on the important things in life. The stories in Beyond Knowing tell of a woman who hears her husband’s song on the radio and experiences the sensation of dancing with him again; a sick dog who helped an elderly grandmother recover from a hip fracture and who found a way to sleep beside her one last time; monarch butterflies who attend the funeral of a young girl who loved them; the man who “meets” his kidney donor and sends a message to the family; and many other profound occurrences. The stories are at once personal and universal, offering guidance for living and loving, and illustrating the importance of connecting with loved ones every day.

The Bereaved Parent
Harriet Sarnoff Schiff

This is the classic book for parents whose child has died - and for all who want to help them. Many such parents feel that no one can help because no one can understand the complex ramifications of their tragedy: the exhaustion, the quarrels with mates, the sleeplessness, the panic, the inertia, the horror of laughter - all the seemingly endless aftermath of sorrow and despair. Yet, because she herself is a bereaved mother, Harriet Sarnoff Schiff is able to give genuine comfort. If you have lost a child, you know that pain like yours cannot be erased, and Schiff does not attempt to do so. Instead, she offers guidelines and practical step-by-step suggestions to help you cope with every stage of grief, from facing the funeral to rebuilding your marriage. Her book will convince you that you, too, can find your way back to the land of the living.

Note: this is an older book but it can still be found at sites that sell used books.
